Operational risk & resilience trainer
With over four decades of experience working across 50 countries, Steve Yates has served in the military as well as in private and public sector organisations, and is a recognised authority on operational risk and resilience. His core subject-matter areas include risk management, business continuity management, technology infrastructure resilience and disaster recovery, cyber resilience, emergency planning, incident and crisis management, and crisis communications.
Steve has been a contributor through the British Standards Institution (BSI) Continuity and Risk (CAR) Committee for Organisational Resilience (BS 65000:2022) and Business Continuity Management Systems (ISO 22301:2019). His recognitions include Freeman of the City of London for his work in technology incident management and disaster recovery; Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT); Founding Director and elected Chairman of the Resilience Association; Certified and Founding Fellow of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI); Certified and Founding Fellow of the Institute of Civil Protection and Emergency Management (FICPEM); Certified Full Member of the Emergency Planning Society (MEPS); Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP); and Certified ISO Lead Auditor by the BSI. He was the first "Brit" to enter the USA's Continuity Planning Management Hall of Fame as "Practitioner of the Year".
The pinnacle of Steve's career came with his appointment as Head of Business Continuity & Crisis Management for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, where he was commended for setting new standards in large-scale event management and resilience planning. Prior to the Olympics he held key roles at BT, Virgin Media and Colt Technology Services, and he has worked with Legal & General Investment Management on resilience planning. Today Steve provides consultancy and training for government agencies, critical infrastructure providers and financial sector organisations, translating complex resilience and risk concepts into practical, implementable strategies.
